Clubs and Activities

Coding Club

Hillside Coding Club is lunchtime club where pupils from P6 and P7 can come along and learn to code using Scratch, Makecode Arcade and Microbits. The Club has been going since 2018. The Club meets on a Tuesday from 12:15-1pm. There are 25 members of the Club.

This year we have received a Digital xTra Grant that we are using to purchase Meowbits, Robots and to fund buses for visits to Aberdeen University, NESCOL and Aberdeen Science Centre.

We have held a Family Code along for members and their families. At Coding Club members work through different Scratch modules to develop their knowledge and skills.

This session the club has had visitors talking to them about designing a game, the jobs available in Coding and the Global Goals.

Currently, Teams are creating a game on either Scratch or Makecode Arcade, focusing on a Global Goal, to help solve/deal with the issue.

Film Club

Hillside Film Club is an inclusive film club that meets on a Wednesday from 3:20-5pm in Room 17 (Woodpecker). We have 25 members at present. At Club we watch a variety of different genres of films, discuss our thoughts about these and write reviews on our Into Film accounts. We also do fun activities like Kahoot! Quizes, Charades, drawing and writing tasks. We often use Into Film resources to help us learn about jobs in film making, the 3Cs and 3Ss, and film angles.

We have created animations, using Stop Motion, figures and silhouettes. We have also done some film making in groups, starring pupils.

Currently we are watching Fantasia and we are focusing on “sound” in film. We are going to be learning how to use Garage band to create music and sounds plus how to be creative in making Foley Sounds.

In June 2022, a group of pupils travelled all the way to London for the Into Film Awards at the Odeon, in Leicester Square. We were nominated for the Award of Into Film Club of the year. This was an amazing experience. We met lots of famous actors/actresses and Into Film staff.
